The Stonington Gallery in Seattle is moving. It is not a big move, just across Jackson Street and down to the corner, closer to Pioneer Square. The new gallery space will be inaugurated on April 4 2013, at the First Thursday Artwalk, with a reception at 5 pm, with many of the gallery’s artists in attendance. A group exhibition of masks, Facing Forward, will include Trevor and Stan Hunt, David R. Boxley, Joe David and Preston Singletary. The gallery will remain open throughout the move. Label at Stonington Gallery

In Seattle, there have been more non-aboriginal artists who work in the traditional style of some First Nations than there have been north of the border, and it’s a controversial topic. The Stonington Gallery has adopted a policy of marking non-First Nations artists work very clearly, as in the label illustrated above. It would be a step forward if Vancouver galleries would follow a similar policy, at least clarifying the choice options for prospective buyers.
