Nisga’a Museum. The new home of Anhooya’ahl Ga’angigatgum’ /the Ancestors’ Collection

The Nisga’a Nation has opened a beautiful museum in Laxgalts’ap/Greenville in northern British Columbia. The “Ancestors’ Collection” contains over 300 Nisga’a cultural treasures displayed together for the first time.

These rare objects were returned to their homeland in September 2010 by the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization (see The Beat October 2010). In the museum, Nisga’a masks, rather than being hung on a wall, are worn by mannequins dressed in appropriate regalia to show their true role.
